How to Keep Safe, Be Respectful, and Have Fun This Halloween 🎃

With Halloween just around the corner, excitement is in the air – from picking costumes to planning trick-or-treating routes! Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch has some simple tips to help families have a spooky, fun-filled Halloween while keeping safety and respect in mind.

Whether you’re heading out with your kids or hosting a Halloween gathering at home, a little planning can go a long way.

Top Tips for a Safe and Respectful Halloween 🎃👻

For Parents and Kids:

1. Stick Together: Make trick-or-treating a family affair! It’s safer and more fun to go with a parent or carer, especially for younger children. Even older kids benefit from knowing you’re nearby.
   
2. Agree on a Curfew: Halloween night can feel endless, but setting a time to return home is a good way to keep things safe and avoid any late-night “where are they?” worries with older children.
   
3. Stranger Danger Reminder: In all the Halloween excitement, it’s easy to forget the basics. Remind children never to go into a stranger’s house or car, even if invited.
   
4. Plan the Route: Check out the route your kids want to take, so you’re happy with it. This keeps kids safe and gives parents peace of mind. Make sure your knocking on doors of people you know.
   
5. Be Seen, Be Safe: Help kids stand out by adding reflective tape or bright accessories to costumes, especially since Halloween can mean lots of road crossings. Glow sticks or battery-powered lights can also keep the spooky glow going safely.
   
6. Battery-Powered Lights, Always: Battery lights are safer than candles and are just as effective. Whether it’s for jack-o’-lanterns or costumes, this small step keeps everyone safe from fire hazards.
   
7. Respect Your Neighbours: Halloween isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! Remind kids to skip houses without decorations or ones with a ‘No Trick or Treat’ sign or houses with no decorations out. 2. Driveway Safety: Kids may pop out from between parked cars or bushes, so take extra care when pulling into or out of driveways. Slow down and give a honk if necessary.
   
3. Alleyway Awareness: Go slow where alleyways meet the road, as children might appear unexpectedly.
   
4. Twilight Visibility: The evening light can make it hard to spot children in dark costumes, so stay alert and keep an eye out.
