Letter from the Police Crime Commissioner to our Neighbourhood Watch members

#Baslow Rural Crime Public Meeting

Local residents and their representatives have told me of their concerns about rural crime in Baslow and the surrounding area. As your Police & Crime Commissioner, I want Derbyshire’s residents to feel safe when going about their daily lives. I also recognise that rural areas expect, and deserve, an appropriate response from the police.

This is why I prioritised tackling rural crime in my Police and Crime Plan and have made it clear that I expect to see improvements to the policing service provided to rural areas, such as Baslow.

To ensure that local policing reflects your needs I have organised a meeting where Baslow residents will be able to discuss their concerns and the impact of rural crime in the area. Representatives from the Local Safer Neighbourhood Team and Rural Crime Team will also be in attendance to hear your views and answer any questions.

The meeting will be held at Baslow Village Hall on 15th February at 6:00 pm and I hope that you will be able to join me there.
Please register your attendance for the event in advance via this link: https://forms.office.com/r/PTAsajtERW

I’m looking forward to this opportunity to listen to the views of local people which will be used to develop a tailored response to rural crime.
Yours faithfully,

PCC DOUBLES FUNDING SCHEME FOR NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Neighbourhood Watch schemes across Derbyshire are being invited to apply for a share of £5,000 to fund new and innovative approaches to crime prevention.

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has doubled his Neighbourhood Watch Innovation Fund from £2,500 to £5,000 in 2020-21 in recognition of the hugely valuable work NHW schemes undertake to reduce the fear of crime and boost public safety.

The funding will be available in two separate rounds concluding in March next year and will help NHW schemes introduce new ideas to promote safety and prevent crime and antisocial behaviour.

Launching the fund, Mr Dhindsa said: “NHW volunteers make a huge difference to our communities and help police become closer and more connected to the neighbourhoods they serve.

“NHW is one of the many important partners working alongside Derbyshire Police to drive criminals from our county and their reassuring presence really does improve quality of life, especially for vulnerable residents who have no other support network.

“Our NHW schemes are worth every penny of investment and I’m delighted to be in a position to double the fund this year to £5,000 in gratitude for the very important work they do.”

Lynn Farrar, Chair of the Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch Association Trust, who will be administering the Fund, said: “We in Derbyshire NHW (DNWAT) are delighted to be able to take the Neighbourhood Innovation Fund into a second year thanks to our Police and Crime Commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa.

“The PCC has agreed to provide the funds to DNWAT to enable us to award Neighbourhood Watch groups and members that will enable them to carry out projects in the community.

“He has also generously increased the amount to £5,000 which means we can provide up to £300 for each successful applicant. We are asking NW volunteers across Derbyshire to tell us about projects that will facilitate caring and resilience within communities.

“This is a very exciting prospect for us as last year we were able to help dozens of NW schemes benefit in helping to build safer communities. DNWAT can once again provide an opportunity of funding help to those NW volunteers to help their communities. These people give their time freely in the endeavour to keep their neighbourhoods safe and to bring their communities together.”

The PCC set up the Neighbourhood Innovation Fund last year and has successfully allocated £2,500 of grants during the past 12 months.

So far, the scheme has funded a new community allotment, dash cams in an area impacted by antisocial driving and NHW dustbin stickers for several schemes to advertise the organisation’s presence in the community.

In addition, the PCC has agreed to fund a new website for Derbyshire NHW to encourage people to sign up to Derbyshire Alert which is due to launch this month.

In addition to doubling the fund, The PCC is also increasing the cap per proposal from £100 to £300 to enable NHW schemes to submit more comprehensive bids.

The first round of grants will be announced at the next NHW/PCC meeting in November.

To apply, please email your completed form (download below) and email to Lynn Farrar lfarrar7@hotmail.com

At our last Annual General Meeting in 2019, I announced that we would be building a website as soon as we could. I am delighted to announce that thanks to the Police and Crime Commissioner supporting us and providing us with funding, we have been able to do that and to welcome you to our website.

We have been very pleased with our working relationship with the PCC, Hardyal Dhindsa, who has also provided the funds for the Neighbourhood Watch Innovation fund that we ran last year. We hope to do the same this year and announce this on the website shortly.

We are also working in partnership with Derbyshire Police and have an excellent communication service via Derbyshire Alert which is paid for by them. We have been able to increase coverage of NW schemes in Derbyshire as a result of working together with local Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

I hope that you find the content of the website helpful and will use it frequently. It contains information on starting and operating a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and provides advice and documents that you can download and use. There is also a Blog page and links to other websites that you may find useful. A Question & Answer page provides you with additional information that may have confused you in the past. Plus there is lots of additional help and advice.

Thank you all for your continuing hard work as NW volunteers.

Lynn Farrar
Chair of Derbyshire NHW
